Part II Samuel

First, some quick background to the story. Last September, a Hyde Park Baptist Church team came out to Kapoeta (Kuh-poy-tah) and Kor Machi (Core-Mah-chee). Kor Machi is a village outside of Kapoeta. Both are primarily made up of the Toposa tribe. The idea was to work out of the African Inland Church (AIC), a.k.a. the mother church. The Hyde Parkers were to strengthen the mother church in Kapoeta, and start a work in Kor Machi. The e3 trip leader was Todd Szalkowski. When Todd came back and talked to me about the trip, he had little confidence in the work the team did, or the future. The team was great, and Todd is a tenacious guy, his concern was the lack of leaders to do the hard work of follow-up. The Hyde Park team members tried to be positive, but as I debriefed them, I sensed the same feelings. As an example one day on the September trip, they spent five hours just trying to extricate the Landcruiser from mud. They couldn�t seem to scare up any men to talk to, and even many of the women were working the fields. It�s not all miraculous victories. We do receive some setbacks, and this felt like one.

But I love those Hyde Parkers. They didn�t throw the towel in. Quite the opposite. They came back. It�s neither cheap nor easy. When you pioneer an area, it�s messy. So far, they�ve rolled with the messy punches. Now flash forward to this past trip. If I had to give it a theme, I�d say we were reminded, with vigor, that our work is always about God, not about us. God never stopped moving and working in Kor Machi, nor Kapoeta.

Example: Totally unknown to us, a school teacher had been trekking out to the village each Sunday where she teaches an average of 80 children about Jesus. Kato Duku was working on following up with three young men. He�s often out of town; he is responsible for the mother church (so his time is divided); and he doesn�t speak Toposa (their language). But he was doing what he could, when he could. Now, here�s the good part.

One of our translators, Samuel Achola, had been stirring. God was stirring him. He�d been a believer since 1982. He�d been in and out of Sudan during the war, was married, raising daughters, and seeking God�s face about where to serve. This is a seasoned man. As the week progressed, he felt led to take on the Kor Marchi area. He was willing to go out there and disciple the new believers, and invest in Orochu, God�s man of peace. This frees up Kato to concentrate on the mother church, which is huge blessing for them as well.

We never could have planned this. But, fortunately for us, this is about God. It�s us following Him and feeling out His plan to redeem the Toposa. So pray for Samuel. The task before him is huge, but so is the opportunity. But wait, there�s more, it gets even better � next email.
